Mid-Continent
SM Energy established its regional Mid-Continent office in Tulsa in the late 1970s. The company has been actively drilling in both the Anadarko and Arkoma basins for a number of years. This office also manages the company’s efforts in the emerging Marcellus shale play in Pennsylvania. In the Arkoma Basin, the focus of activity is on our Horizontal Woodford Shale program, where we continue to apply the latest in horizontal drilling technology and multistage completion techniques to unlock the potential of this unconventional resource play. Testing to determine the optimum drilling spacing is underway, and if successful, could lead to an increase in the number of drilling locations available for future development.
In the Anadarko Basin, we are actively employing 3D seismic technology to identify deep geologic targets in the Springer Formation. Our success in this program has made SM Energy a sought-after partner for other companies with acreage in the area. We also have an acreage position in far-western Oklahoma that has potential for Granite Wash development. Since this acreage position is held by production (HBP), we can monitor industry activity and develop our acreage in a manner that optimizes the value of the property.
Recently, SM Energy acquired an acreage position in the Marcellus, where we are partnering with key operators in the Appalachian Basin to target under-explored parts of the Marcellus Shale to leverage our geologic, drilling and completion shale expertise. Entry into this exciting area provides significant potential in an emerging resource play.
