Rocky Mountain

SM Energy has been active in the Rockies since the early 1990s. After acquiring Nance Petroleum in 1999, we established a firmer presence in the region. SM Energy's activities in the region are focused on the oil-producing formations of the Williston Basin, namely the Bakken and Three Forks formations. Our large acreage position straddles Montana and North Dakota. A significant portion of this acreage position is held by production and relates to legacy development, primarily in Montana. We believe there is potential for infill drilling and recompletion activity targeting the Bakken formation on these properties that could provide future growth opportunities for the company. Additionally, SM Energy has built a meaningful acreage position in previously undeveloped areas of North Dakota. Industry activity in these areas has focused on development of the Bakken and Three Forks formations. Successful testing of our North Dakota acreage has the potential to add significant drilling inventory to our portfolio.
