While the work we do is very important, our employees are our most valuable asset.

The company’s vision and culture drive the way we conduct business. The foundation that shapes our culture is a set of core leadership competencies and values that are clearly articulated and are demonstrated every day in the actions of our managers and our employees. At SM Energy, we consider everyone a leader, regardless of title, position or tenure.

Everyone is encouraged to demonstrate personal leadership as captured in our 5 core leadership competencies:

1

Living SM Energy Values and Ethics—doing everything with the utmost integrity

2

Servant Leadership—placing the needs of the business, the team and others before your own and caring for the environment and our communities

3

Building Collaborative Relationships—establishing good working relationships based on trust

4

Leading Change—exhibiting adaptability and openness to new ideas, people and experiences

5

Strategic Perspective—connecting to the bigger picture and purpose

Diversity, Equity and Inclusion

We welcome anyone to the SM Energy community, regardless of background or personal circumstances, understanding that diverse experiences, perspectives and thought bring a richness to our culture and yield better overall results. We firmly believe in treating all employees fairly and equitably, and apply process and consistency to help ensure appropriate outcomes. All of our employees undergo bias, diversity and inclusion training. We recruit broadly and provide competitive compensation and health and welfare programs to help us build and maintain a broad and varied workforce. Some of these programs include paid parental leave, flexible work hours, subsidized continuing education, and professional development. Our flexible, hybrid approach to work rather than ‘one size fits all’ creates a more inclusive environment where people can manage the demands on their time more holistically.

Employee Engagement and Connection

We believe that engagement and transparency with our employees is an important part of our culture. Quarterly, our senior management hosts a town hall, led by our CEO and CFO, which includes updates on business performance, charitable activities, and safety and environmental performance, as well as highlights key achievements and individuals. Town hall meetings include Q&A with executive leadership where employees enjoy engaging with the team on macro topics, strategic direction, operational results, technology improvements, and various areas of interest. Additionally, throughout the year, officers make ad hoc trips to different field offices to engage with employees to hear firsthand how things are going.

Overall, we’ve established a positive work environment that promotes our culture and long-term vision, and helps our employees thrive. To keep a pulse on employee thoughts and sentiments, we solicit employee feedback through a bi-annual, anonymous employee engagement survey that includes a variety of topics. Our better than 85% response rates are a testimony to how invested employees are in the success of the company. Our most recent survey indicated employee engagement at 77% and showcased particularly high scores in key areas, such as trust in senior leaders; senior leaders have created a culture of health and safety; employee trust in the executive leaders and the direction of the company; employee pride in the company; employee line of sight to the strategic direction of the company; and employee empowerment.

Helping employees connect with one another is never more important than now, when work is accomplished in different ways and from so many different locations. Teams and work groups make a concerted effort to gather in person for training, collaboration, volunteer efforts, and socializing. Across the organization, there are countless opportunities for employees to get together, socialize and connect, whether it’s to gather at the weekly company-sponsored breakfast, to play a board game at lunch with coworkers, or to join colleagues for yoga in the exercise facility. SM Energy makes connection a priority.
